Acanthus RH Architects are an RIBA chartered practice based in a former feed mill on the outskirts of Chelmsford. The practice formally known as Robert Hutson Architects was renamed on the retirement of Robert Hutson in October 2021.

With 40 years of heritage behind us and an established reputation for sensitive, bespoke solutions to often challenging briefs. Our work covers a wide spectrum of the built environment.

Our team have developed specialist expertise across a range of sectors including residential properties, master planning, interior design, adaptation of listed buildings and public community facilities.

HISTORY
The former practice of Robert Hutson Architects was started by Robert in 1982, quickly establishing itself and converting a former feed mill in the village of east Hanningfield into its operating base during the early1990’s.

PETER HEATHER and TRUDI QUIRK
Peter Heather joined the practice in the late 1980’s and rose to become Robert’s business partner for almost 20 years.

Trudi Quirk joined the practice in 2001 and was made an Associate in 2006 before becoming a junior Partner in 2020.

On the retirement of Robert Hutson at the end of 2021, the practice was renamed with Trudi Quirk joining Peter as joint members of the practice.

RESIDENTIAL
The practice members have a long established reputation and expertise in the design of housing projects of all types. Our understanding of planning issues and the challenges of adapting and incorporating protected structures into our designs give us the ability to secure beautiful and effective solutions to complex issues.

MASTER PLANNING
From initial parameter assessment through to comprehensive detail master plan, our team have the established skills to prepare master plan and strategy documents for application or community engagement. Always endeavouring to incorporate the latest thinking on innovation and regeneration of communities.

LEISURE, HOSPITALITY AND COMMUNITY
As a practice we have a varied experience of involvement in leisure, hospitality and community projects, from hotels and pub/restaurants through to ambulance stations and visitor centres. Our talented team approach each project with creativity and a desire to find the best solution to the particular design issue.

INTERIOR DESIGN
As a practice we offer specialist interior design input into a range of building types, either as part of our overall design or as a separate stand alone service.

PRINCIPAL DESIGNER/CDM
We can offer a principal designer input, fully compliant with the requirements on the CDM 2015 regulations for projects where we have undertaken the design and technical packages. .


ACANTHUS
Acanthus RHA is a member of the Acanthus network – a national group of independent architectural practices united by a desire for excellence both in new design and conservation.
The group was established in 1986 and currently has 8 member practices spread across the country.
